Small groups are at the centre of our church life. They provide an opportunity to get to know each other better and to support, encourage and challenge each other to live out what it means to follow Jesus Monday-Saturday, as well as on Sundays.
We do this by looking at God’s word together, thinking through what it means for us today, and praying for each other. There is always time to chat and catch up with what’s going on in our lives and groups often eat together as well.
Home Groups are a great way to feel part of the Redland church community, and you don’t need to hold a particular view, or have a certain level of Bible knowledge to join one.
We have a whole range of different groups; some meet weekly, some fortnightly, some in the evening, some in the day, one on Sunday evening before Ignite. Some follow the sermon series from Sunday mornings, others have a different approach. So, whatever your situation, we should have something to suit you. If you want to try out a group (no strings attached!), or want to find out more, please contact Steve Truscott.
Periodically Redland hosts the Alpha course, which is an opportunity for anyone to explore the Christian faith. You may never have come to church or you may have been coming a while. It’s relaxed, low-key, friendly and fun. Ask anything. Alpha is a place where no question is too simple or hostile. For more information, please contact our Church Office.
The Marriage Preparation Course
We are committed to running weddings well at Redland, but we are even more committed to marriage than we are to weddings! We offer a course for anyone who is planning to get married, whether at the church or elsewhere, which covers key elements of a healthy marriage, including communication, commitment and resolving conflict. The course usually takes place over a weekend and includes a mixture of input from the speakers and video clips of other couples discussing a particular issue. There is NO group discussion – but we do allow lots of time for each individual couple to discuss the topic together. The course is free and there are three meals provided over the weekend. For more information, please contact using the contact form below.
The Marriage Course
From time to time we also offer a course for those who are already married which follows a similar format to the Marriage Preparation Course, but generally takes place over a series of midweek evenings.
If you would like to discuss a particular issue in confidence, or would like to be put in touch with marriage counsellors, please do contact us. Often all that’s needed to transform a marriage is a bit of support.
The Focus group is a weekly gathering for women of all ages and stages in life. We meet in the church halls on Monday mornings in term time with coffee from 10am, followed by a bible and prayer based discussion in small groups. Currently we have around 30 women so there are usually three groups of at least eight in each. The groups are random and so change in membership each week. As many members are also in evening home groups we do not follow the material that the rest of the Church small groups use and we usually use study books (at present a group study series looking at the Old Testament book of Joshua). There is a crèche for pre-school children and members sign up to serve coffee, lead small groups or help our regular crèche leader look after the children as and when they are able.
Over the past twelve years, hundreds of women have been part of the Focus group at one time or another, for short or lengthy periods. It is particularly helpful for those who have just arrived in the Church or who are facing a changing stage of life e.g. retirement or maternity leave. It’s a great way to start the week, a chance to meet others in the Church in a more relaxed setting, and a good way to stay connected while people work out what they should be doing in their new setting. Other Christian ladies groups are available in Bristol and our members are happy to advise! New members are welcome – contact Clare Nichols or just come along some Monday morning!
Midweek Community is a programme designed to build community and friendship in our local area. On the first Thursday of each month the church hosts a lunch, open to everyone without booking, which starts with optional communion at 12 noon, followed by a simple, homemade lunch of soup, bread, cheese and fruit served at 12.45 and speakers programme and social time from 1.30 to 3.30pm. Although everyone is welcome to communion and to stay for lunch, this social event is primarily aimed at senior members of our church and wider community. Lifts are available.
So that there is frequent outreach to seniors in our parish, with an opportunity for them to enjoy social time and to build friendships, we also encourage attendance at and advertise Coffee Pot (in the church hall every Wednesday morning in term time) and the local Senior Film Club once a month at St. Peter’s Henleaze.
